Lab Director
Dr. Sun-Young Shin is the Director of Language Assessment Lab. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Second Language Studies at Indiana University. His research interests include authenticity in L2 listening assessment, L2 pragmatics assessment, L2 vocabulary assessment, and standard-setting methodologies. His work has been published in Language Testing, Language Assessment Quarterly, Language Teaching Research, Assessing Writing,Language Learning and Technology, ReCALL, and TESOL Quarterly. Bihua Chen

Bihua is a PhD candidate. She is interested in the validity of and psychological mechanism in oral proficiency tasks such as retelling and elicited imitation, L2 speech intelligibility, comprehensibility, and accentedness, and automatic tests. She is currently working on her dissertation: Perceptual Reconstruction of Reduced Speech in Non-native Listening.
Jinman Fu

Jinman Fu is a Ph.D. student in Second Language Studies. She received her M.A. in Applied English Linguistics program and TESOL program from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research interests include L2 acquisition on syntax and phonology and language assessment.
Xiaoying Liles

Xiaoying is is a PhD candidate in Second Language Studies. She is a Senior Lecturer teacheing Chinese as a second language in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at IU.
Xinyi Hu
Xinyi is an MA student in Chinese Pedagogy and an Associate Instructor of Chinese in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Indiana University. She holds an MSc in Social and Public Communication from the London School of Economics and a BA in Spanish and Community and Culture from UCLA.
Eric Pochung Lin

Eric is a Ph.D. student in Second Language Studies and an Associate Instructor of English. He received his M.A. in Linguistics from National Chengchi University, Taiwan. He has taught English for over 10 years and Chinese for three semesters. His research interests include listening assessment and pedagogy.
Fengming Liu

Fengming received her Ph.D. in Second Language Studies in 2025. Her dissertation focused on the Interpretation and Production of Verbal Irony by L2 Chinese Learners.
Suchada Sanonguthai

Suchada is a PhD candidate in Second Language Studies. Her background includes Thai EFL in secondary and university education. Her research interests are high-stakes language assessment, test washback, language policy, and curriculum design. Her dissertation study explores issues of test fairness in vocabulary assessment in the context of Thailand secondary schools.
Ludan Yang

Ludan is a Ph.D. student in Second Language Studies and an associate instructor of Japanese. She received her MSc in Applied Linguistics from the University of Edinburgh. Before that, she completed her B.A. in Japanese Language from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China. Her research interests include between-language competition, language assessment, and psycholinguistics.
